Pequod Co. presents the work of artists who address discourses and methodologies of solid validity and relevance for the contemporary world. It supports young and emerging careers through the production and dissemination of bodies of work and exhibitions that navigate and dialogue between current local and global artistic practices, while establishing links with the vibrant national and international circuit. It also serves as a bridge between new generations of audiences and collecting, and artists of a medium and consolidated career through site-specific projects, editorial initiatives and curated exhibitions. On this occasion, Pequod Co. becomes an augmented reality app, where an exhibition of digital sculptures is held, whose starting point was the photographic registration of physical objects. The user will have the opportunity to explore the pieces at different scales and arrangements, both together and individually. The (multi) site specific works presented were produced especially for this exhibition, they do not exist physically.
In recent months, the use of digital media to visit museums, galleries and artist studios has increased exponentially. The appearance of viewing rooms and other types of platforms allow to see physical objects in different geographical locations. With this proposal we seek to create moments where the digital and the physical merge into a symbiotic relationship, through the viewer / user, like a play that can only exist when performed.
3D scanning in the cultural field has been used essentially for the preservation of historical heritage against possible causes of damage and destruction such as wars, natural disasters, pollution, vandalism, etc. We believe that, given the current situation, one of the questions that must be asked is why only the cultural production of the past is considered heritage while contemporary art seems to lack the value to be preserved?
This work format questions the concept of "originality" within the production of works of art and its close relationship with the ability to reproduce and alter the same object. Explore the homology between the human and digital gesture, through the participation of the user / viewer and the app as a performance device. In moments where everything seems to indicate that the residence times within an exhibition will be much more controlled and limited, here is an option to play with the life and contemplation times of a work of art.
This project was developed by LAAA, a laboratory that focuses on both the development and production of works for contemporary artists and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage. Merging new technologies and traditional crafts, Art, Archeology and Architecture Laboratory develops physical and digital tools to achieve the vision of each project.
