The NKJ is a major German translation of the Bible for the first time in 1855 (New Testament) or 1871 (Old Testament) appeared. Although they could never find the same distribution as the Luther Bible, but has gained a lot of friends over the years because of their near-term way translation and text fidelity. Has the literalness of the translation in their precedence over linguistic beauty. Thus she became a model for many other translations.
The name of a nationalized, since a large proportion of translation work in Elberfeld (today part of Wuppertal) took place. Initiators of the translation were Julius Anton von Poseck, Carl Brockhaus and John Nelson Darby. Thus it was initially closely associated with the Brethren movement and the
Textual basis
The NIV translation was one of the first German Bible translation that receptus in the New Testament with the Textus broke in principle and reflected new knowledge of textual criticism. Thus, discovered in the 19th century or previously unpublished manuscripts of the Alexandrian line (eg Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus) were immediately processed in the translation. Both versions use today in the New Testament the critical edition of Nestle-Aland (Novum Testamentum Graece). The Old Testament is based on the Masoretic Text.
Differences to other translations
The NKJ is a source text oriented translation of the Bible. The aim is to reproduce the original text of the Scriptures as purely as possible and with as little theological interpretation. The proximity to the original texts of languages (Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) thus brings a certain distance from a catchy German with them and led into the first issues to linguistic hardships. Since the revisions from 1960 the translators endeavored to improve readability, without abandoning the claim of faithfulness to the text.
The NKJ is still valid than that among the popular German translations, which comes to the basic text at the next - next to the concordant New Testament and some especially as Study Aids imaginary translations as that of Fridolin Stier or the Munich New Testament. The aim of the translation was and still is, "to the original text ignorant ... administer at a low cost as possible a faithful and accurate representation of God's Word in their own language" (from the preface of the first edition). Words that have been inserted for the sake of clarity, but not in the original text are indicated in the NKJ. In addition, in footnotes alternative interpretations and understanding instructions on offer. Pending the revision of 1960ff. was dispensed with the insertion of section headings, as they are not available in the basic texts.
