* The "Psalms" *
It is the longest Book in the Bible, with 150 chapters, 150 poems to be sung !; and they are located in the center of the Bible.
In principle it was called "Book of Praises". It is also called "Psalter", because it was the most used instrument to sing them in community.
It is the most used Book of the Bible in the last 3,000 years, by Jews and Christians of all denominations.
It was the "official hymn book" in the Temple and Synagogue, and it is still so now in Christendom, in the Divine Office, Holy Mass.
God Himself inspired the feelings His children should have about Him, and the words they should use to address Him.
They are the prayers that Jesus and Mary prayed and sang individually, in family and in community.
And it is beautiful to remember, when I pray a Psalm, that I join the universal symphony of the People of God, the best friends of the Lord!
"Protagonists" of the Psalms
There are two: "God", and the "man or woman".
"God"
It is "everything" for the psalmist, who is thirsty for divinity. He is the all in all and for all ... an accessible God, at hand, personal, friend, who cares and helps and heals and saves and protects and caresses ... who punishes the enemy with omnipotence ... and, above all Forgive !, the word "mercy" is repeated over 200 times.
Man or woman"
Trust in God! on all occasions ... in suffering, illness or defeat, he trusts God and pleads with him, and he already thanks him in advance and praises him for the help he is sure to get! ... in victory, Praise with joy ... in sin, ask for mercy, and give thanks for the forgiveness that the Lord is going to give you!
Any occasion serves the psalmist to repeat that God is good and just and merciful and great and wonderful, and protector and healer and savior ... this "unshakable divine faith" is the core of every psalm, the opposite attitude to the atheist !.
How to read the Psalms
Praying them! They are not made to learn, but to pray! To listen to God and answer him. When we pray, we speak to God; When we pray the Psalms, we listen to God and we all need more to listen than to speak.
Each Psalm speaks of Christ and his Church, as Luc says. 24, 44. If in praying a psalm you have not found Christ, pray again! Because you have missed the best.
When a psalm speaks of the "just", Jesus is the just par excellence; when they speak of the "sinner", Christ is the Lamb of God who bore all the sins of the world; When the psalmist "pleads by crying out," or makes supplications with powerful cries and tears, it is the same Jesus of Heb. 5, 7; and Christ himself is the "praiser par excellence", who constantly praises and thanks the Father.
