Book of Lamentations (in Armenian Մատյան Ողբերգության.) - Lyrical and mystical poem by Gregory of Narek. Completed in 1002 AC and is composed of over 10 thousand lines. The earliest surviving lists dates back to 1173 year. Excerpts were published back in 1513 in Venice, the density of the first was published in 1673 in Marseille.
The first known attempt to translate the "Book of Lamentations" on Russian language belongs to the beginning of the XIX century - in 1810 Josephus Joannes, translator of "History of Armenia" Khorenatsi (1809), translated as an excerpt from the "Book of Lamentations" (the third and final part of the chapter 12), and published it in St. Petersburg entitled "Prayer against self-denial, horror."
In 1969, the publishing house "Hayastan", on the initiative of Professor Levon Mkrtchian, published selected chapters "Book of Lamentations" in the Russian translation of Nahum Grebneva (chapters 1, 23, 30, 55, 80). Then, thanks to the tremendous efforts of Professor Levon Mkrtchyan managed to plan and publish the "Book of sorrow" (Gregory of Narek. "Book of sorrow". Translation Nahum Grebneva Yerevan, "Soviet Writer", 1977) with the scientific comments in 1977. The book includes 42 chapters out of 95.
