Return to the Hebrew roots, understanding the true message of the gospel

If the Bible were a simple book of philosophy or theology, or perhaps a theoretical treatise on human behavior, there would be no need to scrutinize the historical and cultural environment in which its various sections were written. But it is much more than that. It is a narrative of the true relationship between God and His people, recorded for posterity, so that each successive generation would have a clear invitation to enter into that same kind of relationship according to their clear example.
Unfortunately, Christians sometimes read Bible stories as if they occurred in a vacuum. Often, there is little or no understanding about the historical period in which the events occurred, much less do we know of other events that occurred at the same time. Throughout Israel's history, God has used nations and armies, enemies and allies, to establish His people where He wanted them.
It is critical that we know of Israel's interaction with its neighbors in the biblical narrative, and we really cannot understand it without knowing the corresponding historical context. That knowledge not only clarifies the Bible but provides a framework for understanding the times in which we live today.
