Whoever I tell you that I’m reading a course on willpower, they almost always answer me: “Oh, it’s not enough for me.” Today, more than ever, people understand that willpower - the ability to control attention, feelings and desires - affects physical health, financial status, close relationships and professional success. We all know that. We know that we must fully control our lives: what we eat, do, say, buy.
However, most people feel losers on this path: in one moment they control themselves, and in the other they are overwhelmed by feelings and they lose control. According to the American Psychological Association, society believes that lack of willpower is the main cause of difficulties on the way to the goal. Many people feel guilty for failing themselves and others. Many find themselves in the grip of their own thoughts, feelings, and passions - their behavior is dictated more by impulses than by conscious choice. Even the most experienced in self-control get tired of defending themselves and ask themselves if life really should be so hard.
My job as a health psychologist and teacher leading a recovery program at Stanford University School of Medicine is to teach people how to manage stress and make sound decisions. For years, I watched people struggle with themselves to change their thoughts, feelings, bodies, and habits, and I realized that these sufferers' ideas about willpower interfered with their success and caused unnecessary stress. Although science could help them, people did not perceive the dry facts and continued to rely on old strategies that, as I was convinced again and again, were not just ineffective - they went sideways, leading to sabotage and loss of control.
This inspired me to create the Science of Willpower course, which I am reading as part of the continuing education program at Stanford University. The course summarizes the results of the latest research by psychologists, economists, neurobiologists and doctors and explains how to break old habits and develop useful ones, overcome slowness, learn how to concentrate and deal with stress. He reveals why we are tempted and how to find the strength to resist. It shows how important it is to understand the limits of self-control, and offers the best strategies for educating willpower.
To my delight, The Science of Willpower quickly became one of the most popular Stanford Continuing Education programs ever offered. In the first lesson, we had to change the audience four times to accommodate the continuously arriving audience. Corporate executives, teachers, athletes, healthcare providers, and other curious people have filled one of Stanford's most spacious audiences. Students began to bring spouses, children and colleagues to familiarize them with the cherished knowledge.
I hoped that the course would be useful to this motley company. The goals of people attending classes varied: someone wanted to quit smoking or lose weight, while someone wanted to get out of debt or become a good parent. But the result even struck me. After four weeks of interviewing, 97 percent of students reported that they began to better understand their own behavior, and 84 percent said that their will power was strengthened by the proposed strategies. Towards the end of the course, students told how they overcame a 30-year-old craving for sweets, finally paid taxes, stopped yelling at children, began to exercise regularly and felt that they were generally more satisfied with themselves and were responsible for their decisions. Their appreciation of the course: he changed their lives. The students were unanimous: The Science of Willpower gave them clear strategies for developing self-control and the power to achieve what it meant so much to them. The scientific findings were equally useful to the recovering alcoholic and to the man who could not tear himself away from e-mail.
